An aerial over the “new” section of the Irpin cemetery which has grown about 150% since Russia occupied this vast and mostly destroyed town of pine trees, pleasant homes and modern condos, murdering hundreds. We filmed this with the full consent of the family pictured, and followed their story through the exhumation of the family matriarch who had been buried in an unmarked grave near a destroyed house, through the inevitable service in Irpin’s now monstrous cemetery. The bodies are still being unearthed here from mostly unmarked graves. You can see how vast the new gravesites are with the city skyline in the background. I had started this trip thinking the term “genocide” was a bit too strong a word to describe this invasion. Now I believe it is 100% what happened here. Ruthless, methodical, vicious destruction and wanton killing of people who posed absolutely no threat whatsoever.
